“Love looks through a telescope; envy, through a microscope.”– Josh Billings

Knowing Will was coming over to attach the aforementioned hose rack, Geoffrey took the opportunity to take his mother out for breakfast and allow Vivien deal with it. She brought out two cups of tea as Will was finishing up, the sleeves of his habitual plaid shirt rolled up to expose muscular forearms as he deftly twisted the last screws into place. He grinned appreciatively when he spotted the cups, and they settled into the deckchairs Vivien had recently bought in anticipation of warmer weather, despite some increasingly gray clouds gathering overhead.

Sydney crouched in a corner of the yard, staring up at Jezebel poised on the top of the fence that separated the Woosters’ garden from Tabitha’s, as she pretended not to notice him with the queenly indifference of her namesake. Vivien was glad Sydney couldn’t read the Bible as it would have given him ideas about how to deal with Jezebels.

“This is a nice outdoor set,” said Will, admiring the chairs and matching table. “I’m not sure I’d leave them out yet, though. Summer won’t be here for months yet.”

“But it’s already April!” Vivien protested. “Surely things will start heating up any time now.”

“That’s California talk,” Will teased. “You’ll find summer here consists of two magical weeks around early July, just in time to taunt the children before they are released from their school year. The rains will then arrive in time to ruin everyone’s holidays.”

“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I don’t know why you don’t all have rickets considering how little sunlight you get,” Vivien reposted. “Or is it scurvy? No, that’s the one sailors get from not eating any fresh fruit.”

“Hmm. I’d still take a chance at scurvy if I could be a sailor. It was my dream job when I was a lad.”

“With a sweetheart in every port, no doubt,” Vivien smiled. “Best you didn’t, that would have driven Hayley mad. She’s jealous enough of the one ex-girlfriend she knows about.”

Will tipped his head sideways as he regarded her doubtfully. “She’s not really, is she? It’s all so long ago, and she should know by now that, for me, no one will ever compare.”

“Well, you might try telling her that, just to be safe.” Vivien sipped her tea before adding, “I thought Clara was lovely, by the way. It seems you’ve always had good taste in women.”

“Much obliged!” Will laughed. “Although my affections haven’t always been returned, of course. As a matter of fact, Clara eventually moved on from me to date your recent acquaintance and newly-made corpse, Malcolm Forbes.”

Vivien’s eyes widened at this information. “Really? What in the world did she see in him?”

“Oh, young Forbes was an up-and-comer, and charming with it. His Daddy was rich, bought him anything he wanted, and it seems he wasn’t bad looking either. Not that I would know.”

“Why do men always say that? I can tell if a woman is beautiful, so why can’t men admit when another man is handsome?”

Will considered his response as he drank his tea.
